A former staff writer and editor for National Geographic News, I am a U.S.-based freelance journalist and photographer whose work has appeared in The Economist, Discover magazine, National Geographic, National Geographic Traveler, National Geographic Adventure (online), the Washington Post, and the New York Times Special Features Syndicate, among other outlets. I previously worked as an award-winning Web producer for National Geographic.com. Exploring stories that intersect science, culture, and the environment, I have reported from four continents and for nearly two years worked as a journalist based on the South Island of New Zealand. In 2007, I was awarded a nine-month Ted Scripps Fellowship in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder. More recently, I’ve worked as a stay-at-home dad and cabinetmaker while renovating a 19th century timber frame house in Peacham, Vermonta vivid experience that preschool and my local salvage yard have helped bring to a merciful conclusion.
